If you're planning a trip to the UK and Ireland and are considering travelling by train, there are a few things you should know before you go. Read below for helpful information regarding travelling by train through the UK and Ireland.
For travel within the United Kingdom and Ireland, you should have been sent a voucher that includes collection codes, unless you are travelling on the Caledonian Sleeper or an LNER train.
To collect your ticket, simply enter your booking reference at the Ticket on Departure Machine at ANY UK station, any time prior to departure. For Irish Tickets, these need to be collected at an Irish Train Station.
You will need to insert a payment card as well. Payment has already been made and your card will not be charged. Wait for all your tickets to print, including your collection receipt, and check the printing tray to make sure you have all your tickets before you walk away.
*Please note that once you collect your train tickets, they cannot be printed again.
Some major cities have more than one main station, be sure to reference your train tickets for the correct departure station. London, in particular, has ten train stations. Please make note of the train stations on your tickets, as the station depends on the route. For example, if you are travelling to London from Edinburgh, you’ll arrive at King’s Cross station, but if you are then continuing to Paris on the Eurostar, you’ll be departing from St. Pancras International Station.
Many airports in the UK also have train stations that connect you to the city centre, and you can purchase train tickets locally or opt to take a taxi.
Most long-distance trains have a cafe bar, serving tea, coffee, wine, beer & snacks, while regional and local trains do not. However, feel free to bring your own food and drink (even a bottle of wine, if you like) onto the train, there are no rules against that on the rails!
Many attractions and tours involve visiting religious sites or cathedrals. With this in mind, it’s important to plan while packing and on the day of your excursion. In general, wearing shorts or skirts above the knee, sleeveless tops, hats, and low-cut shirts is prohibited. Without following these guidelines, you may be turned away or suggested to buy a shawl to cover up. Many attractions also do not allow large backpacks, however, small-sized bags are permitted.
